How the Twelve Zodiac Signs Are Organized — Elements, Qualities and Personality

About 6 min read

Zodiac fortune-telling is the most popular form of Western astrology. Saying 'I'm a such-and-such sign' means where the Sun stood among the twelve signs of the zodiac on the day you were born. The twelve signs aren't random; they're woven from two axes — the four elements and the three qualities.

What the zodiac is

Seen from Earth, the Sun travels a fixed path across the sky over the course of a year. This path is called the ecliptic, and dividing it into twelve gives the twelve signs of the zodiac: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. The sign the Sun occupied on your birth day is your Sun sign. Each sign spans roughly one month.

The four elements — the broad branches of temperament

The twelve signs are first divided into four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is passionate and commanding; Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is practical and diligent. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is intellectual and sociable; Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) is emotional and intuitive. Signs of the same element share a temperament and feel at ease together, while different elements teach one another. This elemental affinity forms the basis of zodiac compatibility.

The three qualities — how you approach a task

The second axis is the three qualities (modes): cardinal, fixed, and mutable. The cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) have a strong power to begin and lead; the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) have the tenacity to push forward and hold; and the mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) have the flexibility to adapt to circumstances. Multiply the four elements by the three qualities and you get exactly twelve combinations, 3 × 4 — which is precisely why the twelve signs don't overlap and each is distinct.

The color added by ruling planets

Each sign has a 'ruling planet' that tints its character. For example, Aries takes Mars's drive; Taurus and Libra share Venus's sense of beauty and harmony; Gemini and Virgo receive Mercury's intellect; and Cancer draws the Moon's emotion. Knowing the ruling planet lets you read, in finer detail, why personalities diverge even within the same element. Splitting each sign's thirty degrees into three ten-degree decans refines the picture further. Within one sign, being born in the first, middle, or last stretch changes the sub-ruling planet, so two Leos can shine in noticeably different ways.

The three fire signs — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Aries (around March 21 – April 19) is a cardinal sign ruled by Mars, and like the person who strikes the first spark it moves first and reaches conclusions fast. Leo (around July 23 – August 22) is a fixed sign ruled by the Sun, so it tends the fire it has lit for a long time and wants its own stage to shine. Sagittarius (around November 23 – December 21) is a mutable sign ruled by Jupiter, and like a spreading blaze it sets out in search of a wider world and deeper meaning. Even within fire, then, the grain differs: the fire that starts, the fire that holds and the fire that spreads.

The three earth signs — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Taurus (around April 20 – May 20) is a fixed sign ruled by Venus, building up tangible beauty and stability slowly. Virgo (around August 23 – September 22) is a mutable sign ruled by Mercury, skilled at examining details and refining things into something useful as it goes. Capricorn (around December 22 – January 19) is a cardinal sign ruled by Saturn, setting long goals, taking on responsibility and climbing one step at a time. All three earth signs have a strong sense of the practical, but they point in different directions: keeping, refining and building.

The three air signs — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Gemini (around May 21 – June 21) is a mutable sign ruled by Mercury, carrying information and talk quickly and moving among many interests. Libra (around September 23 – October 23) is a cardinal sign ruled by Venus, setting the balance of a relationship first and looking for the fair path. Aquarius (around January 20 – February 18) is a fixed sign ruled by Uranus in modern astrology (Saturn in the traditional scheme), pushing stubbornly for new rules that serve the whole group. The air temperament lives in thought and exchange, yet each sign handles it differently: carrying, balancing and changing.

The three water signs — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Cancer (around June 22 – July 22) is a cardinal sign ruled by the Moon, embracing the people closest to it first and building a fence around its feelings. Scorpio (around October 24 – November 22) is a fixed sign ruled by Pluto in modern astrology (Mars in the traditional scheme), so it does not easily let go of feelings and bonds once they have deepened. Pisces (around February 19 – March 20) is a mutable sign ruled by Neptune in modern astrology (Jupiter in the traditional scheme), blurring boundaries and seeping into other people's hearts with deep empathy. This site shows the rulers of Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces, the three signs with a separate modern ruler, as the modern planets on screen and goes back to the traditional planets only when it works out the guardian weekday.

Same birthday, different sign — being born on the cusp

The dates above say around because the boundaries shift by about a day from year to year. Because the moment of Cheoseo, when the Sun crosses into Virgo, changes every year, for people born on August 23 between 1980 and 2026, a span of 47 years, 24 of those years make them a Virgo and the other 23 a Leo. For example, someone born on August 23, 1990, is a Leo, while someone born on August 23, 1992, is a Virgo. Instead of a fixed date table, this site divides the signs by that year's solar-term times, and on days when the result could change with the time and place of birth, it also notes that you might belong to the neighboring sign.

One example — the sky of someone born on May 15, 1990

For someone born on May 15, 1990, the Sun is in Taurus, a fixed sign of the earth element, and the ruling planet is Venus. That year Taurus ran from April 21 to May 21, and May 15 falls near its end, which places it in the third of the sign's three decans. On the same day Venus was in Aries and Mars in Pisces, so this site's love card layers a frank, Aries-style attraction from Venus and a quiet, Pisces-style approach from Mars on top of Taurus's unhurried pace. That is why a person looks far more three-dimensional than when you read the Sun sign alone.

A common misunderstanding — the thirteenth sign and where the stars really are

Every few years a story circulates that Ophiuchus has been added as a thirteenth sign, but it mixes up the constellations in the sky with the twelve signs of the zodiac. The twelve signs of Western astrology are zones that divide the ecliptic into equal 30-degree slices starting from the vernal equinox, so however many constellations pass over them, there are always twelve signs. The equinox point slides westward by about 1 degree every 72 years through precession, so most of the constellations that gave the signs their names now sit shifted toward the neighboring sign. This site uses the tropical zodiac anchored to the vernal equinox, as Ptolemy laid it out in the second century in the Tetrabiblos.

How the zodiac differs from Saju

The zodiac reads tendency from a single point — the Sun's position on your birth day — whereas Saju looks at the ganji of the whole year, month, day, and hour and the balance of the Five Elements. Because the materials and systems differ, rather than one being more accurate, it's better to enjoy them as complements. If the zodiac quickly sketches the broad grain of personality, Saju can be seen as drawing even the flow of life in fine detail.

Grasp just the two axes of the four elements and three qualities, and the twelve signs come into far richer relief. If you're curious about your sign's flow for today, this week, and this month, and your compatibility with someone, check it right below.
